Lit Soc is an Literature Society in which A- Level English Literature students meet on a monthly basis to discuss Literary works across time, From Chaucer to T.S. Eliot with a particular focus on the themes, genre and position of a particular work within the context of their society to give students a more holistic breadth of knowledge surrounding literature and to enrich their academic ability through critical discussion and analysis.
On October 14th 2024, they explored Henrik Ibsen's ‘A Doll House’ as presented by Head Girl, Poppy Watkins, who highlighted the restrictive, diminished role of women within a repressive Victorian society, through protagonist Nora Helmer and unveiling the façade of a ‘perfect’ domestic sphere, through Ibsen’s revolutionary attitudes towards female autonomy and independence from patriarchal societal expectations- as embodied by her authoritarian husband Torvald Helmer.
This drama therefore serves its purpose in causing the audience to question traditional societal conventions in the face of self- sacrifice and the loss of individuality. Through this re- evaluation of the female within a Victorian context, this particular LitSoc session illuminates how this society is essential for the development of an intellectual, creative, independent mindset for young women within our Sacred Heart Community.
