Mother Tongue, Other Tongue - Poetry Competition

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a multi-lingual poetry project, created as a Laureate Education Project by Professor Carol Ann Duffy DBE (UK Poet Laureate 2009-2019) to celebrate cultural diversity and the many languages spoken in schools in the UK.

  • Any language welcome

  • Mother Tongue: This can be an original, creative piece, in your mother tongue or something that is ‘remembered’, e.g., a poem, song, story or lullaby recalled from childhood with a drawing if you want to include one. This can be in any language (but not English) which is spoken at home, in your community or may be the place you or your family are originally from. It should be no longer than one page of A4.

The piece of writing you submit must also include a short explanation of the inspiration behind the piece, what it is about, where it comes from, or why it is important to you (no more than half a page in English).

  • Not judged on the piece submitted (or the translation, if provided) Each piece should be accompanied by a commentary, written in English and focusing on why the poem was chosen/written and what it means to them (no more than 100 words)

The deadline is Friday 7th March and digital entries can be emailed to Mrs Russell or hard copies can be handed in to the Languages office.

The competition is a fantastic way for all speakers of other languages to share something from their culture, language and tradition with a wider audience.
