October 2024 - Black History Month Assemblies

In October this year Sacred Heart celebrated Black History Month, as we do every year, by giving ownership of this topic to our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The Sixth Form students worked hard to deliver an educational assembly to all year groups on the theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives.'

Black History Month is a time to honour the rich and diverse contributions of Black individuals throughout history, but it isn't just about celebrating the past. It's about reclaiming stories that have been overlooked or silenced for too long. The students take great pride in the opportunity to educate and celebrate stories of Black excellence across the years, as well as addressing key topics such as: colourism, racism and prejudice and how, as a society, we can address current issues, such as the civil unrest we witnessed in the riots over summer.

Students have created a proud legacy of delivering these important assemblies since 2021. As a school we link this to our upcoming assemblies on ‘protected characteristics’ and continue to teach about never tolerating prejudice as well as celebrating the diversity we have in our school. We look forward to celebrating our annual Culture Week across Years 7-13 later on this academic year.
