Parliamentary ‘Shout Out’ for Sacred Heart

We have always been very proud of our Alumnae here at Sacred Heart. We were made aware by the Society of the Sacred Heart that four ex-students from UK Sacred Heart Schools had become MPs in the recent State Opening of Parliament.

Catherine McKinnell, Minister of State for Schools, Mary Glindon MP for Newcastle East and Wallsend and Emma Foody MP for Cramlington and Killingworth are all former students from our high school here in Fenham. The fourth MP, Catherine Atkinson, attended Sacred Heart High School in Hammersmith, London and is now serving her constituents in Derby North.

Yesterday, Catherine McKinnell spoke in the House of Commons about the value of a Sacred Heart education, she said:

“I know what a brilliant school and education can mean…I am a Sacred Heart girl, and I am not the only one in this Parliament. The parliamentary Labour party boasts three alumni of my old school, Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newcastle; my hon. Friends the Members for Newcastle upon Tyne East and Wallsend (Mary Glindon) and for Cramlington and Killingworth (Emma Foody) went there, too. My hon. Friend the Member for Derby North (Catherine Atkinson), who made an outstanding maiden speech today, also attended a Sacred Heart school. It means that there are now as many state-educated Sacred Heart girls in the House of Commons as there are old Etonian boys.”

What an amazing ‘shout out’ for our school! Mrs McKinnell has always supported our school and recently visited our Sixth Formers who are studying A Level Government and Politics.

To all our current Sacred Heart girls, I hope you are enjoying your summer break, being kind, helping out at home and reading a book. Remember that with a great attitude and hard work, anything is possible, and we are here to make sure you reach your full potential.

Mrs S Howell,

Headteacher
