STEM Club Explores Polymers and Creates Biodegradable Plastic!

STEM Club provides students with hands-on learning experiences that bring science to life. In the latest session, pupils explored the fascinating world of polymers, discussing the differences between natural and synthetic materials, as well as the importance of plastic recycling and sustainable alternatives.

To reinforce their learning, students had the opportunity to create their own biodegradable polymer using a simple mixture of potato starch, water, vinegar, and glycerol. The ingredients were gently heated and stirred until they formed a clear, viscous, treacle-like fluid.

Under the careful supervision of Mr. Bell, the mixture was poured into heart-shaped silicone moulds to set. Once hardened, the polymer developed a crinkly, cracked texture, demonstrating its unique properties.

This engaging experiment not only helped students understand the science behind biodegradable plastics, but also encouraged critical thinking about sustainability and environmental responsibility.

STEM Club continues to inspire young scientists, fostering curiosity and innovation through practical, real-world applications of science.
