A group of year 11 students recently attended an exciting careers event at the discovery museum in Newcastle. This was organised by NE1Can and led by TWAM (Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums) who operate ten cultural and historical venues including Roman Forts, art galleries and museums.
Many myths exist in terms of the qualifications and interests required to gain employment in this sector and this workshop aimed to explore these and give students a greater insight into career opportunities.
Students participated in some activity-focused sessions to give them some experience of the many and varied roles working within this creative sector. Activities included how to pack a museum object led by the conservation team, how to promote an exhibition with the Communications lead and how to dress a dinner table led by the Events manager.
There was also a careers presentation led by Lucy Lopes an HR Assistant followed by the opportunity to view the museum exhibits, and perhaps now through the eyes of the staff that work at TWAM.
