Year 10s are given the opportunity to develop their skills outside the classroom and support the wider school community. Paired reading is a programme designed to support Year 7 students with their reading skills. 25 Year 10's will each buddy up with a Year 7 and work 1:1 with them at lunch times.
The Year 10's will read with the Year 7's and listen to them read. Mrs Webb and 3 previous paired reader mentors from Year 11 delivered our assembly on Tuesday to promote this volunteering opportunity.
The benefits of being a competent reader are numerous and these benefits extent to the mentor too, in addition to the other skills developed as a volunteer. In relation to their paired reading experience, one Year 11 informed us that 'Personally, I used it for my DofE award, but it's also improved my communication skills, and boosted my empathy as you understand your buddies struggles and help them overcome it. Furthermore, I built patience, and by the end of my voluntary experience, I felt a sense of fulfillment in helping others.' What a a great opportunity Year 10, to get involved and further your own personal development.
